Pepe y el despilfarro en la ONU./Pepe and wastefulness at the UN.

As many people probably know, the UNGA, or the United Nations General Assembly just took place. I just wanted to highlight part of one of the best speeches I think by the Latin American leaders that took part in the Assembly. Uruguayan President José "Pepe" Mujica talked about 45 minutes, and in his intervention, he criticized consumerism. This paragraph of the speech, as an American, really made me consider the capitalistic culture, a culture that is undoubtedly being imposed by the United States of America's "Free-Market" exchange around the world. A way of thinking and living that has profound negative effects on our societies.

We have sacrificed the old immaterial gods and we occupy time with the Market God. He organizes the economy, politics, habits, life and even finances in installments and with cards the appearance of happiness. It would seem that we are only born in order to consume and consume and when we cannot, we carry the burden of frustration, poverty and even self-exclusion. The truth is today, that in order to burn and bury the debris in what science calls the carbon footprint, if humanity as a whole aspired to live as an average American, we would need three planet Earths. In other words: our civilization has taken on a deceiving challenge and at the rate that we are going, it is impossible to fulfill this meaning of wastefulness that has been given to life. The fact is it is that it is massifying as culture our age driven by accumulation and the Market. We promise a life of splurge and wastefulness that constitutes a countdown against nature and against humanity in the future. Civilization against simplicity, against sobriety, against all the natural cycles, but the worse, civilization against the freedom that we are supposed to have to live life, human relations, love, friendship, adventure, solidarity, family. Civilization against free time that doesn’t pay, that isn’t purchased and that allows us to contemplate and scrutinize nature. We obliterated the true jungles, and we have implanted anonymous cement ones. We have confronted sedentary with walkers, insomnia with pills, loneliness with electronics... Is it that we are happy away from human interaction? Dazed, we flee from our biology that defends life with life itself as a superior cause and we substitute it for consumerism functional to accumulation. Politics, eternal mother of human happenings, has become shackled to the economy and the market.

Como muchos ya han de saber, la Asamblea General de Nacions Unidos recién tuvo lugar en la ciudad de Nueva York. Sólo quería rescatar una parte de uno de los mejores discursos ofrecidos por algún líder latinoamericano en la ONU en estos días. El presidente uruguayo, José "Pepe" Mujica habló unos 45 minutos, y en su intervención, criticó el consumismo. Este párrafor de su intervención, como norteamericano, me impactó y me hizo considerar la cultura del capitalismo, una cultura que sin duda está siendo impuesta por los Estados Unidos y su comercio del "libre mercado" alrededor del mundo. Es una forma de pensar y vivir que tiene efectos negativos profundos en nuestras sociedades.

Hemos sacrificado los viejos dioses inmateriales, y ocupamos el templo con el Dios Mercado. Él nos organiza la economía, la Política, los hábitos, la vida y hasta nos financia en cuotas y tarjetas, la apariencia de felicidad. Parecería que hemos nacido sólo para consumir y consumir y cuando no podemos cargamos con la frustración, la pobreza y la autoexclusión. Lo cierto hoy, que para gastar y enterrar los detritos, en eso que se llama la huella de carbono por la ciencia, dice que si la humanidad total aspira a vivir como un norteamericano medio, serían necesarios tres planetas. Es decir: nuestra civilización montó un desafío mentiroso y así como vamos, no es posible para todos colmar este sentido de despilfarro que se ha dado a la vida que en los hechos se está masificando como cultura nuestra época dirigida por la acumulación y el Mercado. Prometemos una vida de derroche y despilfarro, que en el fondo constituye una cuenta regresiva contra la naturaleza, y contra la humanidad como futuro. Civilización contra la sencillez, contra la sobriedad, contra todos los ciclos naturales, pero lo peor, civilización contra la libertad que supone tener tiempo para vivir, las relaciones humanas, amor, amistad, aventura, solidaridad, familia. Civilización contra el tiempo libre que no paga, que no se compra y que nos permite contemplar y escudriñar la naturaleza. Arrasamos las selvas verdaderas, e implantamos selvas anónimas de cemento. Enfrentamos al sedentarismo con caminadores, al insomnio con pastillas, a la soledad con electrónica…. ¿Es que somos felices alejados de lo eterno humano? Aturdidos, huimos de nuestra Biología que defiende la vida por la vida misma como causa superior y la suplantamos por el consumismo funcional a la acumulación. La política, eterna madre del acontecer humano, quedó engrillada a la economía y al Mercado.
